Elliott Murphy - Soul Surfing

The new, surprising album by Elliott Murphy, with the excellent band that backed him on his recent studio work and subsequent tour.

Includes the irresistible single "A Little Push" as well as future classics like"Tell Me", "Come on Louann", "Irish Eyes" and a stunning cover of Tom Waits' "Hold On". A marvel form beginning to end.

Release date:
Jan 28th
2001

Let's let Elliott himself tell us about it:

Well, its Sunday night in Paris and I'm going through my usual post-album emotional vacumn. SOUL SURFING is in the can, all recorded and mixed, and during the next few weeks I'll be putting together the cover with the help of Chloe (designer of previous EM albums like "Beauregard, "April" and "La Terre Commune") and then doing the final mastering with Raphael Jonin of Dyam Studios on November 12. The cover was shot down in Ceyras (near Montpellier) this past summer by Marc Ginot who did the cover shots for CHANGE WILL COME and LIVE HOT POINT. Don't know why (or maybe I do) but I wrote quite a few songs this past year - probably more than 20 - and we recorded a bunch but finally 12 titles made it to the final album and there will even be a couple of bonus tracks for the Blue Rose double vinyl album.

Tentative cover shot for Soul SurfingSOUL SURFING will be released in Spain on Dusty Roses, Germany on Blue Rose, Italy on Venus, and in France on Last Call where it will be a double CD which will include RAINY SEASON which we held off releasing in France to make room for LA TERRE COMMUNE. Confusing eh? My advice is just to buy all the different versions and figure it out later. The release date is January 28, 2002. If you want to find me on that day, I'll be hiding under my bed.

I gotta say I'm pretty happy with SOUL SURFING. I had a lot of help from the usual suspects - Olivier Durand, Ernie Brooks, Kenny Margolis, Florent Barbier - and a reappearance by Patrick Riguelle who sang lots of great harmony on SELLING THE GOLD as well as drumming by ex Concrete Blonde Danny Montgomery and a special appearance by Dusty Roses founder Jorge Otero on Mandolin. There are some real string sections and steel guitar and two covers. And my voice seems to be getting lower and lower.

With the blessing of my poet friend Michael Bulteau who is putting on books on Hachette in France like Dylan's Tarantula I should have a new collection of stories "Cafe Notes" out this winter as well. I hope to get it out in Germany, Spanish and English editions as well.

I'm still kinda traumatized from September 11 and seeing my city with a broken heart but the music brings hope and all of your support and interest is dear to me in these uncertain times. Hope to see everyone out on the road, somewhere, sometime, soon.

Thanks,
Elliott Murphy
